Calling All Sleuths

HERE’S A HEAD-SCRATCHER: In 1962, shortstop Roy McMillan had two cards in the annual Topps set: An All-Star card (#393) and a multi-player card (#211) he shared with fellow Brave, Frank Bolling, called “Midway Masters.” However, McMillan did NOT have a regular card in that year’s set.

It’s a mystery since he had regular cards in every other Topps set from 1952-66. He did not retire and was still playing 150 games per year. … Strange … Baffling … Weird … Odd … Bizarre … Perplexing … Yup. That’s Topps, for ya.

ANOTHER MYSTERY: Why did Topps place the “Midway Masters” I.D. on its side? Other vertical multi-player cards that year have the title oval at the bottom. Hmmmmm.

THE PLOT THICKENS: In addition to everything else, as already mentioned, Topps didn’t produce a regular Roy McMillan card, but took his 1961 card photo (above left) and repeated it on his ’62 All-Star (above right). Hmmmmm again.

OH, ONE MORE THING: For what’s it worth, the 1962 All-Star card was the only other solo Topps card McMillan ever appeared on in a regular set.
