“Banana Ball” — just the name itself sounds fun.

Whether you watch on TV or better yet, in person, Banana Ball is a blast for the whole family.

Even though each game is part ballgame, part circus and part goofiness, playing ball is still the central focus. It’s just that the acrobatics, trick plays and players’ superb athletic abilities embellish the game and turns the experience into a rollicking good time. Among other things, fans will see players in cowboy hats, on stilts and doing backflips. Umpires participate in the entertainment too — including the “dancing umpire.”

Banana Ball also features some unique rules such as: Any batter can attempt to “steal” first base at any time while at the plate (passed ball, etc.). Maybe the most popular rule change is when a foul ball is hit into the stands, if a fan snags it on the fly, it counts as an out. That way, spectators are always part of the game. … And, of course, yellow baseballs are used.

In short, Banana Ball doesn’t mock baseball, it just adds zany twists. For anyone who has seen a Banana Ball game, most would agree it’s a wild, wacky and wonderful time. And boy, is it popular. Fans have literally “gone bananas” over the games … filling Major League Baseball parks, college football stadiums and other venues across the country. Games shown on ESPN television have also had strong ratings. Dare it be called “Banana-mania?”

The Savannah Bananas team out of Georgia was the first — and still best known — squad in the six-team league. With their bright yellow uniforms, they’re instantly recognizable.

Naturally, the Banana Ball phenomenon has spawned baseball card sets. The “Top Banana” in producing these cards is Choice SportsCards. Usually in conjunction with the teams themselves, Choice has been making attractive minor league baseball card sets since 2008.

Shown below are examples of Savannah Bananas cards from the past three years: This year’s Choice set, the previous 2025 Choice set, plus one produced by Leaf in 2024. Other Banana Ball cards exist – including cards of other teams in the league. Therefore, be sure to check out the official Banana Ball website and online marketplaces for card buying opportunities.
