For Dodgers’ All-Star first baseman Freddie Freeman, the road to Cooperstown is a wide open freeway – no bumps, no obstacles, no detours, no traffic jams, just pedal-to-the-metal.
Consider this … Freeman is now entering his 17th season at age 36 and leads all active major leaguers in four big categories. He’s Number One in runs (1,379), hits (2,431), doubles (547) and RBIs (1,322). In addition, he has 367 home runs, sports a .300 lifetime average and has a 64.2 WAR (Wins Above Replacement).
With the way recent Hall of Fame voting has gone, right now he’s speeding toward a first ballot election. Yet, Freeman still has two years left on his current contract. That means the above numbers will swell even more.
Barring serious injury, even if he decides to retire at age 38, he’s likely to have lifetime totals above 1,500 runs, 2,700 hits, 600 doubles, 400 home runs, 1,450 RBIs … and probably around a .300 average.
If the numbers weren’t enough, Freeman has been a member of three World Championship clubs, was a World Series MVP, a regular season MVP, a Gold Glove winner and a nine-time All-Star.
NOTE TO COOPERSTOWN, NEW YORK: Freddie Freeman is barrelling down the highway heading your way.
