Topps Recycles Photos Again and Again and … (Part 2 of 8)

Part 2 of this series continues with a look at Topps use of recycled photos from 1957-present. This time, more examples of Topps using the same photo on different products includes:  1962 Stamps and both the 1968 Game and 1969 Deckle Edge inserts. In addition, the Willie Mays’ cards below show how Topps reused the second black-and-white photo from both the 1960 or 1963 sets on other cards. Also of note is the multi-player star card featuring relief pitchers.

Topps’ 1968 Game cards – which were included in packs – are ripe with duplicate photos.

These Willie Mays repeats were spread over nine years – maybe a record for Topps.
(The “Deckle Edge” cards were inserts in 1969 packs.)

Topps’ 1962 Stamps were an extra insert included in packs of cards.
Vic Power’s ’62 Stamp shows him with the Indians. However he was traded to the Twins on
April 2nd that year. Since Power’s card (#445) wasn’t issued until the 5th Series of the 1962 set – probably in mid-summer – Topps had time to update his card including airbrushing his cap.

Even multi-player star cards were not immune to recycled photos. …
Just change the title, crop the photo a bit and kids won’t notice.

Topps was still at in the mid-1970s, but by then using previous photos had diminished greatly.
