“COMBING” THROUGH THE RECORD BOOKS FOR
SOME SHORT “CLIPS” ABOUT FLOYDS & BARBERS,
HERE’S A “TRIMMED” DOWN SUMMARY ON EACH:

◆ FLOYD RAYFORD (1980-87) – BEST YEAR: 1985 with Orioles … He hit a personal-best .306 in 105 games. His 18 homers and 48 RBIs were also the tops of his career. … Later on, the third baseman/catcher coached in the minors, including 12 years in the Twins organization.

FLOYD BANNISTER (1977-92) – BEST YEAR: 1983 with White Sox … The lefty struck out 193 batters in 217 innings while going 16-10, with a 3.35 ERA. … His son, Brian, also a pitcher, spent five years in the majors from 2006-10, hurling mostly for the Royals.

FLOYD ROBINSON (1960-68) – BEST YEAR: 1962 with White Sox … He had career highs in games played (156), at-bats (600), hits (187), runs scored (89), doubles (45), triples (10), RBIs (109) and average (.312). … His cousin, Tommie Reynolds played in the majors from 1963-72.

◆ BOBBY FLOYD (1968-74) – BEST YEAR: 1973 with Royals … The shortstop only had 425 big league at-bats, including 78 in ’73 when he hit .333 and he had a career-high 26 hits. … He spent 30 years coaching and managing in the minors, with a stint as a Mets coach in 2001 and 2004.

GAVIN FLOYD (2004-16) – BEST YEAR: 2008 with White Sox … Starting 33 games – the most of his career – he went 17-8 along with a 3.45 ERA. … Floyd and slugger Mark Teixeira attended the same Baltimore high school together in the early 2000s.

CLIFF FLOYD (1993-09) – BEST YEAR: 2001 with Marlins … While hitting .317, he belted 31 homers, had 103 RBIs, scored 123 runs and smashed 44 doubles. … After winding up his career at age 36, he immediately transitioned into broadcasting.

STEVE BARBER (1960-74) – BEST YEAR: 1963 with Orioles … The southpaw compiled a 20-13 record to go along with a nifty 2.75 ERA. He also struck out 180.  … Snubbing superstition, Barber wore #13 for eight seasons – which just happened to be the best of his career.

BRIAN BARBER (1995-99) – BEST YEAR:  1995 with Cardinals … Appearing in nine games on the mound in his rookie season, the right-hander went 2-1, with a 5.22 ERA. In 29 innings, he struck out 27, but walked 16. … Barber was chosen in the first round of the ’91 draft by St. Louis.

SAL “THE BARBER” MAGLIE (1945-58) – BEST YEAR: 1951 with Giants … He tossed 298 innings en route to a 23-6 record, with 22 complete games and a 2.93 ERA. … Nicknamed “The Barber” because he was known to give hitters “close shaves” (pitching inside near their chins).

◆ JOHN MAYBERRY (1968-82) – BEST YEAR: 1975 with Royals … The first sacker placed second in A.L. MVP voting by swatting 34 homers, driving in 106 runs, with 38 doubles, 95 runs scored and 119 walks. … His son, John Jr., played major league ball for seven years (2009-15).
