TWIN TIMES — Collectors and Good Friends

BY TROY KIRK

When I was in junior high school in northern California in 1973, I decided to give up collecting so many different things and concentrate on only one – baseball cards. The reasons for this were that I liked baseball and baseball cards better than stamps or coins or anything else I collected. There were a lot of different cards to collect, and they were cheap.

I started collecting seriously at a perfect time too, because almost all of my friends and acquaintances at school were finished collecting baseball cards and were planning on getting rid of theirs. I acquired the bulk of my collection by buying out their cards at low prices.

I had been completely successful at buying all the cards of everyone I knew until I met a new kid in school. I found out he had a pretty good collection including a lot of old cards and my mouth started watering. He wasn’t sure he wanted to sell them, though. My mission was to talk him into selling his cards.

I could see he hadn’t been collecting recently, since he had no cards from the previous years – so that was a point in my favor. Still, I knew I would have to pay more than usual for his cards since he was so hesitant to sell. It seemed like the more I wanted his cards, the more interested he became in them. He started asking me questions about cards and I reluctantly told him something about my collection. He was getting more interested and I soon realized I wasn’t going to be able to buy his collection. I settled for some trades.

After that, we became good friends and he was soon as interested in card collecting as I was. We attended our first baseball card convention together and were hooked for life. I might have lost a baseball card bargain, but I gained a great friend and I’m thankful to this day that I wasn’t able to buy his collection. Oh, by the way, my friend is the Twin Times’ editor, Mark A. Larson.
